Escaped inmate captured at SC hotel

Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - An inmate who walked away from his job site in Florence last week was taken into custody Monday night, according to the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

Josh Gelinas, spokesman for the department, said Derrick Gamble was arrested around 11 p.m. at a hotel in Hopkins, SC. A woman found at the hotel with Gamble was also arrested and now faces charges of aiding and abetting an escapee.

Gamble was serving a two-year sentence for habitual traffic offenses at the Palmer Pre-Release Center in Florence, a minimum-security facility.

The escaped inmate has since been transported to the Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia. Gamble now faces felony escape, a charge punishable with up to 15 years in prison.
