Horry County, SC - CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County Fire Rescue has been awarded a $10,000 thermal imaging camera after winning a national video contest on life safety initiatives.
The contest, sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and Fireman's Fund Insurance, prompted fire departments to create and submit a video highlighting the importance of at least one of 16 Firefighter Life Initiatives.
A video submitted by Horry County Fire Rescue demonstrated how firefighting equipment can be incorporated into an everyday, cost-efficient fitness routine. The video demonstrated the enhancement of health and safety throughout the fire service, in addition to implementing national medical and fitness standards based on the duties that firefighters are expected to perform.
"Horry County Fire Rescue takes the physical fitness aspect for our employees very seriously," Garry Alderman, fire chief at Horry County Fire Rescue, said. "We want to make certain that our men and women out in the field are in the best physical health as possible. By encouraging this, it not only makes them stronger in their work-related tasks, but also ensures better quality of life."
The 16 Firefighter Life Initiatives have been developed by the American Fire Service as a way to help reduce firefighter deaths and injuries in the line of duty.
