FLORENCE, SC – Freshmen Amelia Wallace-Zocher and Yasmin Bunter each scored first-half goals to lead Francis Marion University to a 2-1 exhibition win over UNC Pembroke, Monday afternoon in women's college soccer action.
Francis Marion will open its 2010 regular-season schedule on Friday (Aug. 20) with a 7 p.m. match at High Point University.
Wallace-Zocher scored on a 15-yard shot in the seventh minute after taking a pass from Kelly Kady. She lofted her shot beyond the reach of UNCP freshman goalkeeper Britney Bennett. Bunter extended the margin to 2-0 at the 31:15 mark when she took a feed from freshman Mariel Kaney and grounded a 16-yard shot between the legs of Bennett as she came charging off her goal line.
UNCP sophomore Anna Svensson trimmed the margin to 2-1 with an unassisted score 3:44 into the second half. A free kick by the Braves came to Svensson inside the six-yard box, but her first volley was stopped by FMU junior goalkeeper Lauren Vetock. However, the rebound came right back to Svensson who then pounded in a 3-yard shot.
UNCP had a couple of opportunities for the tying score in the 75th minute, but a shot by Kayla Colon was stopped by a Patriot defender along the goal line and then Ashley Anctil corralled the rebound, but her shot from 20-yards out sailed well over the crossbar.
Francis Marion led the Division II Braves 12-11 in shots, while UNCP held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Vetock made six saves in her 69 minutes in goal, while junior Casey Durham faced only the before mentioned two shots over the final 21 minutes. Bennett registered one save in the first half, while sophomore Rea Segoviano made two stops and did not allow a score over the final 45 minutes.
