Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Francis Marion University is grabbing national attention Tuesday after being ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top universities in the South.

The Florence-based school has been named to the "America's Best Colleges" list by U.S. News & World Report for more than a decade, according to school officials.

FMU President Luther Carter said the familiar honor is a testament to the education provided for students at the four-year university.

"It is an honor to be selected as one of America's Best Colleges in the 2011 edition of the U.S. News & World Report," FMU President Luther Carter said. "This ranking reflects our continued commitment to scholarship and teaching. [It is] a reflection of the quality of our students and distinguished faculty."

FMU is listed in the report as a regional university that provides a full range of undergraduate majors and master's programs. A total of 572 universities are ranked against members of their peer group in four regional categories.
