WMBF News, Red Cross team up for Drive for Life

Myrtle Beach, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds, and now WMBF News is teaming up with the American Red Cross to help boost the region's blood and platelet supply.

On Sept. 1-2, WMBF News will sponsor the "WMBF Drive for Life" at Broadway at the Beach from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Officials with the American Red Cross said the organization typically sees a decrease in blood supply in the days and weeks approaching the Labor Day holiday weekend.

All blood types are welcomed at the drive, but currently the organization's O negative, A negative and B negative blood supplies are low. Type O negative blood is a universal blood type that can be transfused into anyone who needs blood.

Donors 17 years or older who weigh more than 110 pounds are welcomed to participate in the WMBF Drive for Life. Those under the age of 16 who wish to donate can do so with parental consent.

The organization encourages donors to prepare for donating blood or platelets by eating a healthy meal and drinking plenty of fluids prior to donation. Those who donate will also be required to bring a photo ID or Red Cross Blood Donor card to the donation site.

Donors participating in the WMBF Drive for Life will receive a coupon for a free pint of ice cream from Bruster's Ice Cream.
