Georgetown Co. chamber taps into 'app' tech craze

Georgetown County, SC - GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - There's an app for almost everything these days, and now the Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce hopes tapping into the tech craze will generate more foot traffic through its local businesses.

The organization rolled out new "My Chamber App" software Wednesday, allowing smartphone users to better locate area businesses, restaurants and hotels on-the-go.  Chamber officials said the software includes features that allow users to instantly call a member business, pull up their website and check out sales.

"Technology is changing all the time," Georgetown County Chamber member Scott Bearden said. "You have to stay on the cutting edge."

Two types of users were kept in mind when the app was in its building stages - locals and visitors. Those unfamiliar with the Georgetown County area have a built-in GPS system on their side to help better navigate towards a business of choice.

"Visitors who have this app will be able to find out lots of things, [including] where to shop or eat," Bearden said. "It is good for business and it is good for the community."

Georgetown County Chamber President Annette Fisher agreed with Bearden, calling the new technology a "positive move" for both the organization and community. The app, she said, is just one more way to draw attention to the area.

"Apps have quickly become the new way to gather information and communicate, so now there is an app for that in Georgetown County.[It's] making access to our members even easier," she commented.

The free-to-download application is available on a variety of smartphones, including the iPhone, Blackberry and Droid.
