Horry Co. extends informal offer to airport director candidate

Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County has extended an informal offer Tuesday to one of three candidates vying to become the area's next airport director, according to Horry County Administrator John Weaver.

Weaver said an offer for the position has been extended to Michael B. La Pier, the current airport chief operating officer for the Sacramento County Airport System in California. Weaver contacted La Pier by phone Tuesday and expects to know by Thursday whether or not he will take the position.

La Pier told Weaver he must first discuss the offer with his family before accepting the preliminary offer. Should he accept, Weaver will present La Pier with an official offer after the follow-up conversation.

The top candidate currently oversees five airports and is in the process of coordinating a $1 billion terminal modernization program. La Pier previously served as an airport consultant for Will County, IL, and as the executive director of the Central Illinois Regional Airport.

Weaver said should La Pier turn down the offer, the position will be offered to Stephen Cook.

Prior to his application for the Horry County position, Cook was employed at Daytona Beach International, Orlando Sanford Airport, Sanford Regional Airport and Orlando International Airport.

Cook told Weaver that he would still be interested in the position should La Pier turn down the job.
