Identity of man killed in Mt. Pleasant plane crash released

Mt. Pleasant, SC - MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - One person is dead after a plane crashed near the Mt. Pleasant Regional Airport, officials say.

According to the Charleston County coroner's office, Dustin Rabe of Los Gotas, California was killed when his small plane crashed while trying to land around 2 p.m. Monday. Autopsy results are still pending.

Rabe, 29, was flying an experimental craft registered in Wilmington, Del. The plane took off from Merritt Island, Fla., according to flight tracking website The FAA said the  plane was a single-engine experimental aircraft called the Comp Air 8.

The National Transportation Safety board and the Federal Aviation Administration will be on the scene to find out what caused the small plane to go down.

Investigators said the crash site and the fire that consumed the plane are making the investigation challenging.

The last local plane crash was April 1 on the Stono River. A Johns Island man died when his plane went down near the Johns Island Executive Airport.

Federal investigators believe this plane was built at home.

A small air-craft went down in a pond in a Mt. Pleasant neighborhood last September. Two people were on board, but no one was hurt in that crash.
