Myrtle Beach, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A 26-year-old man has pleaded guilty Monday in the 2008 death of his 3-year-old stepdaughter.
Jason Marshall, 26, pleaded guilty to inflicting great bodily injury upon a child after a coroner's autopsy revealed his stepdaughter died from head trauma in December 2008.
Investigators allege Marshall had taken Audrey O'Berry, 3, to the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center after he told medical personnel that the child had fallen and was unresponsive. O'Berry was later taken to the McLeod Medical Center where she died of head wounds.
During an autopsy, a coroner revealed the toddler had died from trauma to the head and noted there were several bruises on her body during the examination.
Following questioning from Horry County Police, detectives revealed Marshall had become irritated with the child and pushed her into a wall in the family's home on Burcale Road.
After falling to the floor, O'Berry became unresponsive.
Detectives said Marshall admitted to hitting the child on multiple occasions in the past, causing bruising on her body. Christa Marshall, O'Berry's birth mother, was aware of the abuse.
Jason Marshall's felony charge led the 26-year-old to be sentenced to 20 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
Christa Marshall was also arrested in connection to the case and was charged with unlawful neglect.
