Police: Man, woman posing as City of MB utility workers

Myrtle Beach, SC - MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A man and a woman posing as utility workers with the City of Myrtle Beach Public Works Department are at the center of a small investigation Monday.

Mark Kruea, spokesman for the City of Myrtle Beach, said the Myrtle Beach Police Department has received three reports of a man and woman posing as utility or tree company workers. Kruea said the duo told homeowners they were testing water and needed to access faucets inside of the home.

In a second instance, the couple told homeowners they were checking trees for a company called Safety Management Control, which city officials said does not exist.

Homeowners have not reported any thefts in the incidents, but officials do advise that city utility workers wear city uniforms and drive city vehicles. Kruea said workers will not ask for access to a home unless a homeowner has reported a specific problem.

Residents who encounter suspicious visitors are asked to request identification information from the company and question the reason for the visit. Any suspicious activity should be reported to the Myrtle Beach Police Department at (843) 918-1382.
