Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper has been arrested and fired following an eight month narcotics investigation in Horry County.
Agents with the Horry County Police Department's Narcotics and Vice Section, in addition to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety and State Law Enforcement Division, initiated an investigation into allegations of the trooper being involved in illegal drug activity.
During the investigation, which stemmed from December 2009, surveillance was conducted on Lance Cpl. Bobby Lee Spurgeon while he was on and off duty.
Officials report on Friday, Spurgeon was found purchasing 3.5 grams of a white, powdery substance at a bar in Myrtle Beach. Spurgeon, according to Horry County Police, was taken into custody and charged after the powder tested positive for cocaine.
Spurgeon was off duty at the time of his arrest and has since been fired by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Spurgeon is out of jail on bond and now faces charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
