FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – Florence native and Francis Marion alum Pearl Moore is getting ready to join another Hall of Fame, though she'll admit, this one is a little different. Moore learned last month she would be inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in the 2011 class. The class of inductees was officially announced last week.
"I wasn't looking for it, I wasn't prepared for it," said Moore. "I was thinking, if I got it, I got it...if I didn't, I didn't. It hasn't really hit me yet. I guess in July or June next year, when I'm standing on the podium accepting it, then I'll really feel it."
Moore is hosting her 4th annual basketball camp this week at her former high school, Wilson High School in Florence. Moore is already a member of the South Carolina, Florence and Francis Marion Athletic Halls of Fame. This upcoming honor will be a little different.
"I am nervous even though I haven't really accepted it yet," said Moore. "I guess when it's here I'll know what it feels like."
Moore may be best known for her scoring record: 4,061 career points, which includes points scored during her time at Anderson Junior College.
"Points are points and records are made to be broken. Eventually someday somebody will get it. If that's what I'm receiving this award for, I don't know until it's officially announced I don't know what I'm getting into the Hall of Fame for."
Moore played for Women's Basketball Hall of Fame member Sylvia Hatchell while she was at Francis Marion. Hatchell is currently the women's basketball coach at North Carolina.
