Local Montana Community decides on Sex Ed. for elementary scolders

Helena, Montana -

(NBC) - Hundreds gathered in Helena, MT Tuesday, July 13th to speak out on a controversial proposal for a new sexual education curriculum that begins in kindergarten.

The new curriculum includes teaching students the proper anatomical terms for sex organs before first grade.

Also included in the new curriculum, and drawing the most fire: Fifth graders would be taught the different ways people have intercourse and first graders that people of the same gender can fall in love.

"This is wrong, it's absolutely wrong. What they're doing is they're trying to undermine everything that I want to teach my kids," Earl Charles a father said.

A recent high school graduate spoke in favor of the proposal, saying it was a lack of information on sexuality in the school system that lead to his harassment in high school.

"In high school I was bullied relentlessly. I was shoved against lockers I was called a faggot continuously," Harlon Reed-Moore said.

Each side was given one hour to make its comments to a nine member board.

Nearly 300 who did not make it into the hearing listened on speakers outside.

Supporters say the proposed health education curriculum contains honest, science-based information on wellness and allows students to make better decisions.

The superintendent says parents will have the option for their kids to opt out of the new curriculum.

If the new curriculum does pass it will take up to three years to be implemented.

The nine member board will vote next month.
