St. James teacher receives national Red Cross award

Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A committee chairman serving the American Red Cross has been chosen as one of nine individuals to be recognized with a national drowning prevention award.

The Coastal South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross announced Monday that Julian "Duke" Brown was recognized with the 2010 National Drowning Prevention Alliance Community Lifesaver Award.

Brown serves as the current chair of the Preparedness, Health and Safety Committee of the area Red Cross, in addition to providing the Red Cross Junior Lifeguard program to area youth.

Brown is a teacher at St. James Elementary and a member of the Horry County Beach Patrol.
