6-year-old dies after June 24 near-drowning incident

Murrells Inlet, SC - MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) - A 6-year-old boy has died Sunday at a Charleston hospital after a near-drowning incident on June 24.

Sgt. Robert Kegler, spokesman for Horry County Police, said the boy was rescued from a pool at Oceanside Village in Murrells Inlet around 7 p.m. on June 24. Witnesses told police the boy was found at the bottom of the pool and submerged in an estimated 6 feet of water.

The boy, from Summerville, SC, was transported to the Waccamaw Regional Medical Center with a pulse. Shortly after his arrival to the Grand Strand hospital, the child was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina by helicopter.

The child was identified after his death by the Horry County Coroner's Office as Nicolas Ellwanger. Officials said Ellwanger died from complications resulting from the near-drowning incident.
