LONGS, SC (WMBF) – Police are investigating a shooting that fatally wounded a teen in Longs early Saturday morning.
According to the Horry County Police, two brothers, ages 12 and 15, were handling a firearm when it went off. The shot hit 15-year-old Caleb Moore, wounding him.
Officers responded to a call of the shooting on GP Smith Avenue shortly after midnight. Moore passed away a few hours later at a Loris Hospital.
People in the area of Longs just off Highway 9 say their neighborhood is quiet and they were sad to hear the news.
Moore attended Loris High School and was a friend and classmate of Ashlee Flinn. She said she had only met Moore this year, but he had a special way of charming people.
"He had an obsession with zombies and he could make anyone laugh. He was never mean to anyone no matter what," said Flinn. She also said Moore could turn a bad day into a good one easily.
Flinn hopes other people will be spared from the lessons of this tragedy.
"Lock it up. Teach [your kids] not to mess with guns or any other thing that's dangerous and let them know the consequences before they actually have to suffer them," said Flinn.
Police are investigating the incident and will decide whether there will be any criminal charges filed.
