Mexican national in MB pleads guilty to illegal re-entry to U.S.

Columbia, SC - COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - A 32-year-old man from Myrtle Beach has pleaded guilty for attempting to re-enter the U.S. illegally, according to U.S. Attorney William Nettles.

Jose De Jesus Hernandez-Ortega announced his plea Thursday in a Florence federal courtroom after previously being deported from the country.

Officials said Hernandez-Ortega was arrested on March 22 for driving under the influence in Horry County. Local authorities who made contact with agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement later learned Hernandez-Ortega had been deported on two previous occasions.

ICE records further verified that the 32-year-old was a citizen of Mexico and did not have permission to enter the U.S.

The maximum penalty Hernandez-Ortega can face is a $250,000 fine and up to two years in jail.
