Myrtle Beach, SC - MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Horry County is in the midst of planning the first-ever community built playground in Horry County, according to a press release from county spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier.
Palmetto Adventure Land will be constructed from Sept. 21-26, and Horry County is asking the community to assist in the assembling of the playground. Bourcier says crews will need hundreds of volunteers to come together on an empty piece of land to building the playground in less than one week. The playground will be located on Carolina Forest Boulevard next to the future Carolina Forest Library and Carolina Forest Recreation Center.
Students at Carolina Forest and Ocean Bays Elementary schools designed the playground, assisted in naming it and helped provide the artwork throughout the playground. The project will include a boat, submarine, wave facade, a music area, swings, slides, monkey bars, games, picnic tables, a park and more.
The playground will be free to the public and will be available for all families throughout our county. The project was inspired through funding secured by Sen. Luke Rankin in the amount of $300,000.
"Play is child's work," Bourcier said in the release. "Children learn, grow and develop through play; improving their physical, cognitive, and social skills. Nowhere is more evident than the neighborhood playground."
Bourcier says the playground equipment is designed to provide opportunities for children of all abilities to experience sensory-rich play. All children can play together with their peers, neighbors and family and will be handicap accessible.
The county is looking for individuals, businesses, home owners associations and other organizations to help build the playground. Anyone interested should contact Horry County Parks & Recreation at 843-915-5330. Bourcier says they are looking for approximately 175 volunteers each.
The county is also offering various sponsorship packages, including an "Adopt a Component" campaign. Pricing for sponsorship packages range from $30-$2,500.
