CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The South Carolina Aquarium's newest attraction is surprising audience members. The 4D theatre adds a new dimension to their movie-going experience.

"4D is taking a 3D movie where you would need the glasses to see it and then adding a fourth dimension to it," said Jason Cricthon, Director of Husbandry and Facilities.

Glasses give the audience the experience of 3D. The fourth dimension comes in with the addition of more effects.

"There is snow that comes out during a snow scene. There are bubbles during an underwater scene. Things that tickle your legs, it's a personal experience," Cricthon said.

The fourth dimension allows the audience to use senses other than their sight and hearing. They don't always know what's coming.

"The air goes and sneaks up and puffs you in the face.  There are smell lines hidden in the floors," Crichton added.

All the effects are controlled by a computer. The theatre is a mobile unit but you would never be able to tell by the inside. The fourth dimension keeps the audience members on the edge of their seats.

"It's a theatre and a 3D movie. The effects will surprise you," Crichton said.

The 4D theatre at the SC Aquarium is the only theatre like it in the state.
