Sumter woman charged for illegally receiving disability benefits

COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - A 41-year-old woman has been charged in a one-count indictment after overpaying Social Security disability benefits.

U.S. Attorney William Nettles said Wednesday that Clarissa Washington, 41, of Sumter, overpaid the benefits by $40,166.62.

The overpayment occurred due to Washington's failure to disclose child support payments that would make her ineligible for disability benefits on behalf of her son.

The maximum penalty for the case, according to Nettles, is a $250,000 fine and up to 10 years in jail.
