HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Waccamaw Economic Opportunities Council is participating in the Summer Food Service Program to provide meals to students in Horry County.

Meals will be provided to all children 18 years old or younger without charge. The sites for the program were chosen based on the schools in the area. Schools must have had 50 percent or more of their students on free or reduced lunches to have their area qualify for federal monies, which pay for the program.

The program runs through July 30, 2010.

Program organizer Shirley Smith says the sites, which are open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon, serve 4,500-5,000 boxed lunches weekly. She says no notification went out through the school system, but that they have relied on word of mouth and community groups to get the word out about the program.
