Darlington County, SC - DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Three men have been charged by the Darlington County Sheriff's Office in connection with a number of stolen ATVs, according to authorities.
Brandon Jackson, 23, Howard Sumner III, 20 and Ricardo Ham, 18, all of Hartsville, are charged with possession of stolen goods. DCSO spokesman Capt. Andy Locklair said the three men were arrested while driving one of the ATVs that had been reported stolen.
Locklair said the Sheriff's Office has received numerous reports of stolen ATVs in the past several months. Investigators have recovered five of the vehicles this week, which led to the arrests.
Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd says this is the start of what he calls a break in the case.
"Start with five and hope that we can find out where they're getting rid of them or whatever and they would help us track them down further," said Byrd.
Byrd says people need to remember to keep their ATVs in a secure location and understand how easy it is for someone to crank it in a matter of seconds. He says people should also keep their serial number in a safe place, because if the original owner can't prove it's theirs he won't be able to give it back to them.
"It's important for us when we recover a piece of equipment like this in order to get it back to the original owner we have to have the serial number," Byrd added. "Which means the owner has to have it recorded somewhere."
Locklair said more arrests and charges are possible. The case remains under investigation at this time.
