SOCASTEE, SC (WMBF) - WMBF News Speed Patrol made a trip out to Folly Road in Socastee with a radar gun to clock drivers after one viewer wrote in concerned about speeding along the roadway.
"People are speeding in excess of 15 mph over the speed limit with people walking on the road with no side walk to walk on," the viewer wrote.
While the speed limit on Folly Road reads 30 mph, some say it might as well be a checkered flag.
"Oh my goodness, it's like a racetrack," said neighbor Pat Schaeffer, noting it sounds like NASCAR. "You'll hear them coming down the road and then all of a sudden, 'zoom.' And then they'll go down there and then they'll go 'zoom' back [in the other direction]."
Schaeffer says taking her pup for a stroll on Folly is no walk in the park.
"We have to come in the grass to get away from them," she said. "They'll run you over."
It is a fear not only for dog lovers, but for yard-cutters too.
"It's dangerous," Jimmy Childers emphasized as he was out mowing lawns. "You've really got to look over your shoulder because you've got to cut close to the road to keep your yard looking decent."
He says it always seems to be the same sight: "Fast cars [and] young kids speeding up and down the road."
"They just speed by," Alan Guadagno agreed, as he was out riding his bike with a friend. "Especially like the young ones. They see how fast they can go if they have a nice car."
Schaeffer says if she could have the ears of those speeders she would send one clear message: "'Slow down!' There's kids that live here and there's animals," she said. "I'd like to walk the dog in peace," she added with a laugh.
