CCU takes ownership of golf course

Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Coastal Carolina University received a 188-acre gift on Wednesday afternoon after assuming an outstanding debt.

The South Carolina Budget and Control Board unanimously approved the gift and purchase of Quail Creek to Coastal Carolina University, according to Martha Hunn form Coastal Carolina University.

The owner of Quail Creek gifted the property to CCU, with the university assuming the outstanding debt of $3.1 million, according to CCU officials.  They say the property appraised for $3.7 million, so it ends up being about a $600,000 gift.

CCU will now assume the golf course and the driving range.

The university, in cooperation with Horry-Georgetown Technical College, has administered the course since 2004.  The school entered into a five-year lease of the property to provide a central base of operations for its Professional Golfers' Association golf management program.

CCU operates Quail Creek as a public course that also serves as a classroom and laboratory for students in its respected golf management program.
