Darlington, SC - COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A judge has cut a sentence in half for a registered South Carolina sex offender serving prison time on a federal gun charge.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Beth Drake says 51-year-old Kenneth Glenn Hinson was sentenced Tuesday to about 10 years in prison.

Hinson was charged in 2006 with raping two girls in an underground room behind his Darlington County home. He was found not guilty, but federal authorities immediately charged him with weapons possession since Hinson was already a convicted felon and had a gun when arrested.

He was convicted and sentenced to 25 years. But a federal appeals court granted his request for a new sentence, saying Hinson shouldn't have gotten more than 10 years.

Hinson has already appealed the new sentence.
