SOCASTEE, SC (WMBF) – Some Socastee residents spent part of Monday cleaning up after strong storms caused damage in their development.
The winds destroyed fences and broke windows in the Cameron Village neighborhood just off Highway 707.
Nick and Betty Lazar's home took the brunt of the winds as their fence was stripped bare. The couple says the wind ripped panels off the fence's frame and sent them flying across the yard.
Today the Lazar's worked to get the pieces out the path of another possible storm.
"We weren't [going to] clean up but I couldn't look at the yard the way it was," Betty Lazar said.
She and her husband helped their neighbor's clean glass off their patio and then worked on the mess in their own yard.
The Lazar's put a call into their insurance company but say the deductible is not worth paying, so now they face losing almost $4,000.
"We're probably [going to] have to just suck it up and take a loss on the fence for now," Betty Lazar said.
One woman in the Cameron Village neighborhood just put her fence up last week and it was also ruined. The residents say they may not have luck with their insurance companies, but there was no shortage of helping hands.
"It's a very close community," neighbor John Pomeroy said. "People care about each other. One of my neighbors told me about the damage here and I thought let me come over and see if there's anything I can do to help them."
