Johnsonville, SC - JOHNSONVILLE, SC (WMBF) – A public hearing was held in Johnsonville on Monday night to secure funding for a statue to be built in honor of General Francis Marion.
Johnsonville City Council voted to commission the artist to start the work for the statue which will cost about $50,000. But the project is still in need about $30,000 worth of funding to complete the project.
Council says they will have to make up this amount with private donations, but some in Johnsonville are worried the funding will have to come from public money to make up the difference.
The statue will be built at Witherspoon's Ferry which is where Francis Marion accepted command during the Revolutionary War.
Johnsonville hopes this will become a major tourist attraction for their city.
