Accident in Florence sends mother, child to hospital

Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - A 59-year-old man has been slapped with a felony DUI charge after a Monday afternoon accident in Florence sent a mother and her 18-month-old to the hospital.

Officials with the Florence Police Department said they were dispatched to a location on Ceves Street after receiving reports a taxi had been rear-ended by a vehicle. By the time police arrived on scene, officers said the suspect vehicle had fled the scene.

As the vehicle was eluding police, investigators said it appeared to have driven through a stop sign at the intersection of King Street and Sycamore Drive, striking an oncoming car.

The occupants of the oncoming car, only identified as a mother and her 18-month-old child, were immediately transported to a Pee Dee hospital.

Benjamin Spears, 59, of Florence, was taken into custody by Florence Police. He was charged with felony DUI and leaving the scene of an accident with an occupied vehicle.

The conditions of the two accident victims have not been released.
