FCSO deputy resigns amid investigation

Florence County, SC - FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A deputy with the Florence County Sheriff's Office resigned Friday following an investigation into allegations that he improperly removed weapons from evidence storage.

According to FCSO Capt. Michael Nunn, Hartwell Bryant violated department policy on May 11 by removing seven weapons and returning them to the owner, who was under investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Sheriff Kenney Boone suspended Bryant with pay pending the ATF investigation.

"At no time were these seven weapons unaccounted for while they were in our possession," Boone said. "There has never been a question about the integrity of our evidence storage facility, which is audited at least once a year. Even though this was an isolated event, we have conducted a random inventory of our evidence room which revealed no other irregularities or missing items."

Bryant's resignation was effective immediately.
