Myrtle Beach, SC - MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A tight budget year has forced the City of Myrtle Beach to call off its sponsorship of an Independence Day celebration at BB&T Coastal Field, officials announced.
Mark Kruea, spokesman for the City of Myrtle Beach, said the decision to forego the sponsorship will affect a picnic, concert and fireworks show at the area stadium.
Despite the cancellation, fireworks will be available from the Second Avenue Pier at 9:30 p.m. Sunday. The show, according to Kruea, will be visible along much of the beach.
Other fireworks will be shot off both Saturday and Sunday at Broadway at the Beach and BB&T Coastal Field, following the Myrtle Beach Pelicans' games.
Prior to the holiday, officials are warning both locals and tourists that the sale, use or possession of fireworks within city limits is prohibited. Approved professional displays are the only exception.
