DNR, police capture black bear in Florence

Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – Police and SC Department of Natural Resources say they captured the black bear that was seen roaming around Florence earlier today, according to Major Raines with the Florence Police Department.

Police say at around 7:30 p.m. a motorist spotted the bear heading south on Darlington Street toward the All Star Lanes Bowling Alley.

Police responded to the area and spotted the bear behind the bowling alley where they kept an eye on the bear until DNR officials could arrive.

SCDNR officials were able to shoot the bear with a dart and then police say the bear ran up into a tree.

According to police, once the bear started feeling the effects of the medicine inside the dart, it fell out of the tree into a ditch that was padded with pine straw.

SCDNR officials told police they think the bear is alright but they are taking it to get checked out before releasing it back into the wild.
