DNR, police suspend search for bear in Florence

Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Police and SC Department of Natural Resources officials have called off the search for a black bear spotted roaming around Florence Friday morning.

SCDNR spokesman Capt. William Poole said someone spotted the small bear near Vulcraft at 1501 W. Darlington St. Florence Police Maj. Carlos Raines said police were on the scene to assist the efforts of wildlife officials.

Around 11:45 a.m., officials on the scene closely watched a wooded area near Darlington Street and Cashua Drive; however, they told reporters they had not seen the animal in about an hour.

After DNR officials and police moved their search area to Scofield Street around noon, the search for the black bear was called off.

Poole said a sow will typically keep her cubs for two to three years, and then push them out. At that time, young bears often go looking for somewhere to live. He noted that more development in addition to the 2009 wildfires is leading to more bear sightings.

Officials ask anyone who spots the black bear to call the Florence Police Department immediately.
