New recreation center breaking ground

Myrtle Beach, SC - MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Work is officially underway on Horry County's new recreation complex.

Officials broke ground on the new South Strand Recreation Center and athletic fields. The new center will sit on Scipio Lane near the South Strand Government Center.

The 5.2 million dollar facility is set to open in August 2011. The center will feature a gym with a walking track, two multi-purpose meeting rooms and an exercise room.

"We'll be able to offer more baseball, football, soccer programs to people in the South County," Gary Watson of the Horry County Construction and Maintenance Department said.  "It's not limited to the South County.  Everyone from the county can come to any of our facilities."

The new center will also host after school programs, summer camps, athletic events, and senior activities. The complex will also have three baseball fields along with three multi-purpose fields and a concession stand.
