Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Residents in Horry County will soon have one more place to pursue a healthy lifestyle, as area leaders broke ground on a new recreation facility Thursday morning.

The South Strand Recreation Center and Athletic Fields, located on Scipio Lane, is the county's newest construction program valued at $5.2 million. The 21,000 square foot center will offer members with a gym, walking track, meeting rooms and exercise areas.

Officials anticipate the recreation center will also host a variety of after-school programs, summer camps, athletic and senior activities.

In addition to an indoor facility, the South Strand project will also make available three baseball fields, three multi-purpose fiends and a concession stand off of Holmestown Road. The outdoor features will be dedicated in memory of Terry B. Cooper, a former District 5 councilman and chairman.

While the new facilities will help keep area residents active, officials say it will simultaneously benefit the environment.  The county plans to pursue LEED Gold Certification on the building, a designation given after construction has completed.

The LEED Gold Certification, according to officials, is a multi-category green building rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Certification is awarded to properties based on their site sustainability, water efficiency, energy use and atmosphere.

The South Strand Recreation Center and Athletic Fields is scheduled to be completed in August 2011.
