The saying, "Build it and they will come" seems to apply when you are talking about additional airline service for the Grand Strand. In May, the Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) passenger enplanement report showed nearly 95,000 enplaned passengers – the largest amount ever in recorded history. This represents a 30 percent increase over last year's passenger enplanement numbers.
Consider This: I'm sure the improving economy played a role in this great news, but there were really two major factors that drove the traffic increase. The first item that impacted the increase is the additional flights and carriers that have been added over the past few months. And second, the increased marketing efforts by the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce had a direct impact on recruiting these visitors.
Drive-in guests will always serve as the majority of our visitors, but continued growth of air traffic is a key piece of the overall puzzle. With the recent opening of the general aviation terminal and the renovations and expansion on the way for the passenger terminal, the numbers should continue to grow and that's some good news we can all use.
