Trio charged in 3-state stolen vehicle conspiracy

Columbia, SC - COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - Three people have been charged in connection to a three-state conspiracy to buy and sell stolen vehicles, according the U.S. Attorney William N. Nettles.

Ernest L. Cook, 61, of Mullins, is charged in the case along with Larry Garfield Carter, 54, of Raeford, NC, and William Clayton Meadow, 29, of Jupiter, FL. According to the indictment, a number of the thefts by Carter and Meadow occurred in North Carolina. Authorities say the vehicles, most of which were heavy equipment, were transported to South Carolina for sale to Cook.

If convicted, the defendants each face up to $250,000 in fines and five years in prison.

Agents with the FBI investigated the case.
