Brunswick County, NC - BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WMBF) - An Ocean Isle Beach organization has donated dozens of children-sized life jackets to the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office in an effort to keep area waters safe.
Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram met with Josh Tew on Wednesday, who represents SeaTow of Ocean Isle Beach. The SeaTow Foundation for Boating Safety and Education is aiding in a combined effort to provide the public with safety information to ensure security on the water.
As a result of the donation, the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol Unit will be able to provide the jackets to boat owners who may have the wrong size of jacket for a small child.
Officials say selecting a flotation device for children is of the utmost importance, as hundreds of children under the age of five drown in the ocean every year. Having the right sized children's life jacket is of critical importance when boating.
