Body found that of homeless man; no foul play suspected

Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - The body of a man found near a garbage bin at a former fast food restaurant in Florence is that of a homeless man, according to authorities.

Investigators with the Florence Police Department say a body has been found at the site of a former Burger King restaurant Wednesday afternoon. Maj. Carlos Raines, spokesman for the department, said the body was found around 5 p.m. at 2087 W. Evans St.

Florence County Coroner Bubba Mathews said the body appears to be that of Baxter Howell, 62. Matthews said officials have been unable to locate next of kin and are asking anyone that might know the victim to contact Florence Police or the Coroner's Office.

A group of people renovating the former Burger King restaurant found the remains near an area where trash is collected.

The Florence County Coroner's Office and Florence Police are currently investigating what led to the person's death.

Matthews noted that at this time there is no evidence of foul play, but that the body was badly decomposed and they cannot be certain until the autopsy is completed.
