Summer storms prompts officials to educate on power surges

Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Officials from Progress Energy demonstrated the power of a lightning strike Tuesday, and how surge protectors are so important to keeping your electronic valuables safe.

Progress Energy set up a demonstration and simulated lightning strikes hitting a home, literally exploding some common household items.

"Surges can come in through the phone, the cable line, or the satellite lines just as well as they can come in on power lines," explained Alan Swisher. "So if you're buying a surge protector you want to buy one that has the ability to protect the cable lines or the phone lines."

All-in-one surge protectors can cost around $80. Some power companies like Progress Energy offer more advanced surge protection to your home for an added monthly fee.
