Man struck by train in Horry County

Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - One man has been flown by helicopter to a North Carolina hospital after he was struck by a train near Conway Tuesday afternoon.

The Carolina Southern train carrying steel from Chadburn, SC, to Conway struck the man around 3 p.m., according to a company spokesman. The train engineer said he saw a man on the tracks get up from the path of the train, and at the last second, leaned back towards the train and was struck in the head.

Emergency crews found the man beside the tracks in the minutes after he was hit.

Horry County Fire Rescue spokeswoman Leslie Yancey said the victim has been transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center by helicopter.

Officials say the train was traveling less than 10 mph at the time of the accident.
