Inmate who drowned near Galivants Ferry Landing identified

Galivants Ferry, SC - GALIVANTS FERRY, SC (WMBF) - The search for a missing inmate near the Galivants Ferry Landing late Tuesday afternoon has been called off after divers recovered the man's body from a body of water just after 5 p.m.

Robert McCollough, spokesman for the SC Department of Natural Resources, said divers were asked to assist in the search after Ronnie Davis, 40, went into the water near the landing while working on a chain gang. McCollough said Davis was reported missing around 3 p.m.

Officials have no indication Davis was trying to escape from law enforcement, but rather trying to cool off from the afternoon heat. Davis and a second inmate entered an area of water and both began to struggle. One inmate was helped to a small pier area, while Davis went under the water and never resurfaced.

Marion County Coroner Jerry Richardson said Wednesday that an autopsy confirmed Davis drowned.

Horry County Fire Rescue and Marion Fire Rescue crews assisted DNR investigators in the search.

According to officials, Davis was serving a sentence for first degree criminal domestic violence.
