HCFR firefighters top SC Combat Challenge

Horry County, SC -

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - They save lives for a living, and a recent South Carolina Combat Challenge proved Horry County Fire Rescue has some of the best firefighters in the state.

Department spokeswoman Leslie Yancey said Horry County Fire Rescue's "Team Horry" recaptured the title of South Carolina Combat Challenge Champions, as they competed on June 11 in various challenges that tested their firefighting skills.

"Our team trains all year long for these competitions and we are proud of Team Horry's showing," Michael Medeiros, team captain, said.

Medeiros was joined alongside teammates David Howell, Aaron Windsor, Michael Noreck and Jim Edbrooke. A second team from Horry County included Ken Norton, Erin Pravel, Kris Armstrong, Pam Wingate, Timothy Rainbolt, Bart King, Dan Shankle and Matthew Smith.

Team Horry's first team placed first in the open relay and overall challenge, while the second team placed third in the overall challenge.

Medeiros placed second in the Open Male Individual Competition, while Edbrooke took home third. Wingate and Rainbolt accompanied the two with a third place finish in the Co-ed Tandem, and Shankle and Smith placed first in the Chief's Tandem.

The teams will compete in November at the World Firefighter Combat Challenge, to be held in Myrtle Beach.
