Ex-St. James teacher gets prison for sexual assault

Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A former eighth-grade social studies teacher at St. James Middle School will serve time in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a minor, according to court documents.

Norbert Richard Ryan, 33, pleaded guilty to second degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor and was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Benjamin Culbertson to serve seven years in prison. Culbertson also ordered Ryan to be placed on the Central Registry of Child abuse and neglect and for him to pay court costs.

Ryan was arrested after allegations arose of a sexual relationship between him and a 13-year-old student. Following an investigation, Ryan he was placed on administrative leave by the district and soon after, he resigned from his teaching position in December.
