74-year-old MS man dies in ocean

Myrtle Beach, SC -

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A Tupelo, MS man died in the ocean off of 82nd Avenue North Thursday afternoon after he suffered a cardiac arrest while swimming with his granddaughter.

Myrtle Beach Police Capt. David Knipes said the 74-year-old Tupelo, MS, man was swimming with his granddaughter in the ocean off of 82nd Avenue North around 12:30 p.m. when he began to struggle. Life guards noticed the commotion and went into the water to attempt a rescue.

Knipes said when the life guards got to the man, he was face down in the water and had no pulse.

The man was unresponsive when he was pulled from the water and life guard initiated CPR, Knipes said. When EMS arrived, they transported the man to Grand Strand Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard after a medical examination was performed, they determined his death was caused by a cardiac arrest.

Officers were called to the area of Carver Street, Washington Street and King Street in the City of Myrtle Beach after 3:00 a.m. Friday, according to Sergeant Steven Clothier. Five or six shots fired is what was reported in the original call, Clothier said, several casings were on the ground near the Cover Apartments.
