Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - The Florence Optimist Club is gearing up for the second annual Art in the Park, which will be held Saturday at the Lynches River County Park.
The event, which is free and runs from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., is open to the general public. "Art in the Park" is geared toward children ages 3-12. Unsupervised children under age 13 will not be admitted and parents cannot drop off children under 13 or leave them unattended.
The club says the event is planned to "bring out the best in kids" through exposure to arts and crafts.
The tentative list of activities and exhibitors includes:
- Tie-dye t-shirts, balloons, crafts, sidewalk art, crafts and activities and face painting
- Musical performances by Slug's Revenge and The Michael Scott Groove Co.
- Dance performances by the students of Kelley's Fine Arts
- Storytelling and sing-along
- Puppy fair
- Misting tent
- Food and beverages
New for 2010 is the "Star of the Park" karaoke competition for kids, open to anyone under 18 years old. Preliminary auditions will be held the day of the event, on the outdoor Race4Taylor stage from 10 a.m. to noon. Competitors will be auditioned on a first come, first served basis.
Auditions cannot be guaranteed, and will end promptly at noon; please arrive early and prepared. A parent must be present to sign a permission slip in order for the child to participate.
Five finalists will be selected by a panel of celebrity judges, including Wheelz 100.5 DJ, Sloane Spencer, the First Lady of Florence Laura Wukela, and Florence music teacher, singer and multi-instrumentalist Allen Johnson.
Finalists will compete on the indoor Musical Depot stage at 12:45 p.m., with the winner announced at 1:30 p.m. The first place "Star of the Park" winner will be awarded a three-song recording session at MDR Studios!
