Socastee, SC - SOCASTEE, SC (WMBF) – The 15-year-old boy who drowned Sunday afternoon in the Intracoastal Waterway has been identified.
Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick said Kevin Samir Duarte, of the Forestbrook community near Myrtle Beach, died of asphyxiation by drowning. The boy was swimming with a group of people near the Socastee swing bridge around 2:30 p.m. Sunday when he disappeared.
Search crews with Horry County Police, Horry County Fire Rescue and the Department of Natural Resources recovered Duarte's body around 4 p.m.
Officials with the SC Department of Natural Resources originally reported Duarte jumped off the bridge, but did not resurface. However, DNR spokesman Robert McCullough said Duarte was swimming with his friends in the area and went underwater. McCullough said the teens may have been jumping off some rocks on a nearby island, but that has not been confirmed.
