Conway Crawl draws tourists to historical downtown

Conway, SC - CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Tastings, demonstrations and night-owl sales will highlight a new event in Downtown Conway, aimed at increasing foot traffic through the historical town.

"We are very excited about unfolding the new Conway Crawl concept," Executive Vice President of the Conway Chamber of Commerce Bridgette Johnson said. "The overall goal of the Conway Craw is to introduce the uniqueness and the character of [Conway's] downtown shops to locals and visitors alike."

On Thursday's guests to Conway will have the opportunity to cash in on late-night shopping deals and live music throughout the area.

"The Conway Chamber certainly understands that our historic district is the hub of Conway's visitor experience, and as a community at large, we all need to take advantage of the resources we have to attract as many visitors as possible to Conway," Johnson said.

Hillary Howard of Conway Main Street USA said business has started to pick up and thinks this will give it an even bigger boost.

"In the last 6 to 9 months we've seen a surprisingly huge increase in our storefront occupation rates," Hillary Howard of Conway Main Street USA said.  "Once a week we have a new business coming to inquire about locations and opportunities downtown and its promotions like this that encourage them to locate their business here."

Business owners said the constant effort by the city of Conway, the Conway Chamber of Commerce and Conway Main Street USA is helping boost sales and alerting people that the city is a great shopping area.

"People forget about it and every time they remember or come in they say oh, I forgot Conway was so neat," Nicole Moore, owner of the Gypsy boutique, said. "They have so much here to offer, the restaurants are so good the stores are so cute."

The City of Conway will host the Re-Fried Blues Band during its inaugural Conway Crawl on Thursday, beginning at 8 p.m. The concert, according to organizers, will be held along Third Avenue between Main and Laurel Streets.

In addition to entertainment, food and extended business hours, River Memories Boat Tours will offer special evening hours.

The Conway Crawl is a joint venture of the Conway Tourism Committee, made of representatives of the City of Conway, Conway Main Street USA and the Conway Chamber of Commerce.
