CCU catcher finalist for Johnny Bench Award

WICHITA, KS – Coastal Carolina University senior catcher Jose Iglesias has been named one of the three finalists for the 2010 Johnny Bench Award, the Greater Wichita Sports Commission announced today.

Iglesias is hitting .348 with 15 doubles, 14 home runs and is tied for the Big South lead with 71 runs-batted-in for the Chanticleers this season.  He has a .459 on-base percentage and a .636 slugging percentage.

Iglesias has thrown out 16 runners trying to steal and has committed just four passed balls on the year and he has started 55 games behind the plate.

He has hit two home runs in a game three times this season, including hitting a pair in the win over Winthrop May 9.  He drove in five runs against Michigan March 13 and was 3-for-4 with five RBI against Presbyterian April 2.  He also opened the season with a 14-game hitting streak.

Iglesias will join Miami's Yasmani Grandal and TCU's Bryan Holaday as finalists for the Bench Award.

The award will be presented July 1 at a banquet in Wichita, Kansas.

Iglesias is the second Coastal Carolina catcher in three years to be named as a Bench Award finalist.  Dock Doyle was a finalist in the 2008 season.

Coastal Carolina opens 2010 NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional play Friday, June 4 against Stony Brook.  The game starts at 1 p.m.
