MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The City of Myrtle Beach is celebrating the official ribbon cutting for an Air Force Base museum exhibit Monday. The permanent exhibit is set up at the Base Recreation Center on Gabreski Lane in Myrtle Beach.

Veterans playing bingo at the center say they are thrilled to see the city honor the history of the base.

"It gives me goose bumps," Air Force Veteran Franco Krzynowek said. "It's really patriotic."

Diane Moskow-McKensie, a senior planner for the City of Myrtle Beach, says the exhibit has been in the works for three years. She says in that time, committee members have worked to research the base's history and gather memorabilia to fill the lobby of the recreation center.

"People really appreciate this," Moskow-McKensie said. "A lot of people that served on this base retired here and they really appreciate the fact that we're remembering all of their hard work."

She says while the Market Common may grow into a shopping and entertainment destination, they are hoping to always honor the area's roots.

"We don't want people to ever forget that this was an Air Force base in Myrtle Beach."

The ribbon cutting will take place at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Base Recreation Center.
