DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) - The family of a boy who died from drowning at a Darlington City pool are looking for clues as to how his death happened while lifeguards were on duty.

"I just want to know what really happened down there," said Aleca McKay, the teenage victim's mother.

The Darlington County Coroners office confirmed 13-year-old Justin McKay's death shortly after being rushed to a Florence hospital from the pool off of Gary Street in Darlington. An investigation has been activated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the pool remained closed on Sunday.

"My son was held under water for hours and I want to know why that happened" said Ms. McKay. Another child was injured from the accident and remained hospitalized as of late Sunday.

"You would have expected people to be more aware" said Michelle law, a relative of the drowning victim.

Justin's mother told WMBF News that her son did not know how to swim but that there were lifeguards around.
